Centre Accuses West Bengal Government of Non-Cooperation in Providing Security at RG Kar Hospital
The Union government has moved the Supreme Court, accusing the West Bengal government of "systemic malaise" and "willful non-compliance" in providing essential infrastructure and security for the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) stationed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata.
The Centre's application, filed through the Ministry of Home Affairs, demanded that the state extend full cooperation to the CISF, failing which the top court should initiate contempt proceedings against the Mamata Banerjee government for violating the Supreme Court's orders.
The Supreme Court had ordered the deployment of CISF at the hospital to provide security to the doctors after a trainee doctor was raped and murdered in the hospital's seminar hall on August 9. Despite repeated requests, the state government has not provided necessary logistics and security equipment to the CISF personnel, making it difficult for them to perform their duties.
The Centre accused the West Bengal government of acting in a manner "not only contemptuous but also against all the constitutional and moral principles which the state should abide by". The state government's non-cooperation is seen as a deliberate attempt to frustrate the Supreme Court's efforts towards a solution-oriented approach. The Centre has sought contempt proceedings against the officials and authorities of the West Bengal government.
