Strengthening ties: PM Modi holds bilateral talks with Brunei’s Sultan, departs for Singapore
Prime Minister Narendra Modi had a meeting with Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei on Wednesday to talk about a range of topics to boost the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Key topics that were discussed were trade ties, building people-to-people exchanges, and enhancing commercial linkages.
It is the first time that an Indian Prime Minister has travelled to Brunei on a bilateral visit. PM Modi received a warm welcome from Sultan Bolkiah and his family at Istana Nurul Iman, the official residence of the Sultan and the seat of Brunei’s government.
PM Modi’s visit is considered a major milestone in the 40-year diplomatic relationship between India and Brunei which has been built based on understanding and mutual respect. Brunei holds a very significant place in India’s ‘Act East’ Policy and the Indo-Pacific vision, as highlighted by the Ministry of External Affairs.
Before heading for Brunei, PM Modi expressed anticipation of making strong bilateral ties with the country by giving special focus on the field of energy, trade, defense, investment, and people-to-people exchanges. The Crown Prince Al-Muhatadee Billah received PM Modi at the airport. He also interacted with the Indian diaspora, launched the new chancery premises of the High Commission of India and visited Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque. The prime minister of India has left for Singapore on his next diplomatic tour.
